One Year Blogiversary

It’s been on year today since I began this blog with intentions to give myself a hobby, and to keep my writing juices flowing while I took a break from writing my book.  And all things considering, the first year of this blog has brought many ups and downs.  With school, work, and life, there are times when I feel like I have neglected Over a Cup of Coffee, unintentionally of course, but neglected it all the same.  I have gotten a lot better, now that I’m not worried about school, but I still feel like this is something I need to get used to.  Until I’m one hundred percent comfortable with it, and a lot more confident with it, Over a Cup of Coffee may always been something cooking on the back-burner of my mind.  I guess there are pros and cons to that – I do have other things more important, and that’s ok to me.  But I still am extremely proud of my blog, and I think considering that for almost half of my first year, Ryan was the only one really keeping up with it (thanks! haha).  Since then, I’ve really branched out.  I’d like to thank Tom Baker especially because he randomly found my blog one day (not even sure how, maybe he’s a wizard…that’d be awesome!), and with his help, my site hits have gone up more than triple than what it started as.  Well, it’s probably more than triple, but I’m no good at math.  So thank you Tom, and thank you to Blaga, Judy, Saber, Melinda, and everyone else who’s been stopping by lately.  And thank you of course to Ryan for always reading my blog even when I didn’t make you haha.

January had 139 hits, while December had 1,778 (incase you can’t see it on the picture).  So as you can see, my blog was kind of just “sticking to home”; most of the people reading were only people I knew from Facebook, or the random accidental visitor.  Once the summer hit, there’s been a massive increase.  Though it’s definitely not nearly as many hits as some of my fellow bloggers, I’m proud of the increase, and it has definitely baffled me.  I started this blog for myself really, and it’s just amazing to me that people actually care what I have to say, what I think and how I feel.  It’s a really great feeling, so thank you to anyone reading this!

My top post of all time was the Top 10 Fictional Characters I Would Go on a Date With, which is definitely one of my favourites that I wrote this year.  I probably had the most fun writing it too – it was one of those random days where I was in a great mood, felt really silly and just let my mind-filter shut down for a while.

The day with the most hits was December 12th, which was the day with the Community Networking Meme.  This doesn’t surprise me at all, this was a great networking project, and it really helped bring a few new readers to my blog.  And the great thing about this (beside how fun and interesting it was), was that I got to find so many blogs that I want to keep reading.  Now that life is slightly less busy, I can start going down my post it of “must-reads” and catch up.

I have a few favourite posts from fellow bloggers that I’d like to share on this post as well.  Though I’ve just recently found some amazing blogs, there have been three that I’ve been reading for a while now, so I’m sorry if I don’t mention any of your posts yet – most likely I haven’t read as many of yours (for the time being), so I hope no one feels left out!  Anyways, first off is Blaga from Scent of My Heart.  I couldn’t pick a favourite, because I love all of her poems, they’re beautiful, and a really different style than what I write, and it just feels so amazing to read them.  She puts so much emotion and imagery in them, and they just know how to invoke a specific emotion when you read them.  I hope one day I can write with such powerful raw emotion!  As I said, I couldn’t pick a favourite, so here are four that really stood out in my mind – I think everyone should check them out if they haven’t: When Light Meets Darkness, Butterflies, Regret, and Broken Glass.

Now as I already mentioned, Tom Baker from Morning Erection has helped me out in so many ways, that I probably will never be able to make it up to him completely.  He’s kind of like the mentor to my student, the master to my padawan if you will (ohhh I like that one better, points for Star Wars reference).  He encouraged me, he let me do a guest post, and he even featured me in one of his Poetic License posts.  I definitely loved his The Most Beautiful Girl in the World Post, which was just so moving and so relatable, it was beautifully written.  I also really loved his Blogger Meet-Up Nude Dinner Party post.  It was just a really creative and fun idea, that was a blast to read.

My good friend Saber from What’s Up with That?!? has also started a blog, and I just love it to death.  Her blog reminds me of when we used to live together in college, and it makes her being so far away more bearable.  Her unique sense of humour definitely shines through in her posts, and I don’t think I’ve laughed harder reading something before.  My favourite posts of hers are definitely the Top 10 Fictional Characters Crushes, Strange New Discovery, And The Cheese Stands Alone… , and FLAG BOY – The Unsung Sidekick.  I look forward to more of your posts!

Now I’ve talked a lot about other people’s posts considering its MY blogiversary, which you know, is like the most important thing at the moment (Ryan says I am the embodiment of modesty, I know, right?).  I thought that I’d give some of my own stats and favourites from my blog that WordPress can’t tally.

Post I’m Most Proud Of
A Day With Gerard – this is one of the few pieces of my work that I’m really proud of and I hope in the future more people will read it.  It was hard for me to put it out there, and I’m proud of myself for going out of my comfort zone.

The Best Rant
Sponges to Society Need a Kick in the Face – I think this is my best rant.  It was written in the heat of the moment, and I think it’s probably the most entertaining.

The Best “Top” List
Top 10 Fictional Characters I Would Go on a Date With tied with Top 15 Favourite Songs from Musicals – these were just super fun to write, and they were real hits on my blog.

The Most Heartfelt Post
Singlehood and Craving Intimacy tied with February Reminds Me of You and I Hate It – these two were probably the most honest posts I’ve ever written, and they come from dark, deep places in my heart.

Newest “Series” I’m Looking Forward To Write
Coffee Wars – I’ve started with the holiday special, and even if no one else likes these, I have a lot of fun writing them (plus it gives me an excuse to indulge in my coffee addiction)

Post I Wish More People Read/Commented On
Post Hoc, Ergo Propter Hoc – I just spent a lot of time on it and it didn’t get that many hits *shrugs*, c’est la vie.

Poetry Thursdays
In total I have had 39 Poetry Thursday posts as of today, and have had about 71 poems in total included in those posts.  I can’t pick a favourite, because to me they are always pieces of work that are never fully complete, and that I can always improve them.  But I did pick out a few that I liked better than others, either because I think they’re better quality or because they mean more to me.  They are:

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone for making my first year as a blogger an interesting one.  I am really looking forward to 2011 (in many aspects other than just blogging too), and I hope that this year will give me some great inspirations!  Thanks again!

  1. Happy blogaversary! This is so exciting, I can’t believe that it has been a year already, so crazy!

I know that I am not always the best for remember to check for new posts (acutally, I am pretty terrible at it, ha) but I really love dropping by and reading whatever you have posted. Whether it is youe lovely poems, or you top (insert number here) lists, you have a great sense of humour, honestly, and a lovely way with words that goes into everything you write!

To many more blogaversaries to come!

congrats agian I am so happy for you!!!

    • Yes you and I are like this *arm flappy thing* lol I definitely miss you and seeing you every day, and I’m happy that we can still have our shared crazyness from such a distance!

And yes, I do love when I can make productivity out of something I waste my time on normally lol, plus now I can have more time to look at the coffeeman! lol

I’m hoping to do more posts in the future, sometimes it’s lack of inspiration, or lack of time, or laziness. But it’s something I want to do more 🙂

And yes, Tom is trying to protect us muggles!

  2. Happy Blogiversary! (you know if I were there right now I’d being singing a really annoying aniversary song for you)

Many of your favourites from your blog have been mine aswell (but isn’t that always the way with us?). I love the variety of your posts because it’s more like talking to you, which I miss so much! I’m glad my crazy antics have still been able to make you laugh even from so far away. Yours have certainly left me rolling on the floor many times!

I for one look forward to more coffee wars posts, now you can argue that your coffee habits are productive! Don’t you just love when you can do that?

I have to agree with Tom I wish you updated more because I could honestly read your blog everyday. (I know you don’t have time, but I can dream)I’m so glad you’re doing more poetry thursdays, I always look forward to them every week.

I can’t wait to see what you come up with in the next year of blogging:)

  3. I am no wizard! Your blogs has something I liked – your personalities and the rest is history. Congratulations on your one year and I am so happy you are getting more and more visitors!

Your blog is great and I must agree with Blaga that the part of your blog I like most outside of Poetry Thursday is your movie reviews.

I do have a complaint about your blog. I really shouldn’t mention it because you have already addressed it. My complaint is that you don’t post more often. I look forward to your posts and shamelessly admit I wish you posted more!

I really shouldn’t talk about my blog on your anniversary however I am planning something along the lines of the meme that I hope you and Blaga take part in. More info later next week. Hopefully you will like it as much as you did the meme.

I was really touched by Singlehood and Craving Intimacy. Very honest and I felt like I got to know the real Cherlyn. As I read it I felt like I was in the same room with you and you were talking to me.

In closing, I would like to say keep up the good work, post more often, get to work on your blogroll (smile), and congrats on the award from FCBA!

    • Aww well I’m going to pretend you’re a wizard anyways 😛 lol. And thanks! you had a big hand in helping me get more visitors 🙂

I know, I want to post more too, but like I said, sometimes I put other stuff first – and sometimes that stuff isn’t nearly as important as my blog lol. It’s definitely something I want to try to work on. I’ll let you know :).

I’m definitely intrigued to see what this project is – keep me posted!

And as for the blogroll…I knowwwww….Part of it is laziness (a big part of it), part of it is forgetting to do it, and part of it is that I need to borrow my friends computer to do it the way I want to do it. It’ll probably happen around the same time I fiddle with my layout. Soon hopefully.

And FCBA? Man I’m probably being really dense and not catching on to something, but I’m drawing a blank. I got an award? Or is this a little joke that I’m missing (most likely this one lol).

Thanks for stopping by as always!!

      • Maybe you should check your spam filter. Yes you won an award (no joke). You got the First Class Blogger Award from Rose (the whole committee). Please check your email.

    • Aha, it was in my junk mail. Didn’t even realize i had a junk folder until I looked for it. Thanks! 🙂 I’ll mention it in my next post (as most people may not see it if I add it to this post). I’m very honoured, thank you so very much :)!

  4. Ah and I forgot it’s time to do that together poem we thought about before Christmas 🙂 whenever you have time inbox me ….

  5. Awww, happy first anniversary sweet Cherlyn! What a lovely post!

I am really honored with everything you said about me here. I didn’t know my writing had such an effect on people and it was kind of sparkling to the soul to read it!

Well feelings are mutual. I too love stopping by Over a cup of coffee. I like the most your Thursday poetry, as you said totally different than what I write, but still so much to learn from.

I also love your movie reviews, honestly you should do that more often, the way you describe the characters and the action it doesn’t reveal what really happens, the mystery and desire to see the movie is kept, but still you know what to expect.

Great job you’ve done, keep it that way. I sure will continue coming here for more. So here is scent of gratitude to Tom, because thanks to him I met you/ smiles/ isn’t he the best of wizards?!?

Be always that shiny and kind person. Lots of hugs!

    • Thanks! And I’m glad that my writing can be inspirational too, it makes me want to keep writing. And everything I said about you is true, so don’t forget it :).

I think I want to do more reviews too, just need to figure out what movies I want to review 😀 lol. I’ll keep you posted 🙂

And yes, I’m happy that Tom allowed us to meet! 🙂 Lots of hugs back!
