Community Networking Meme

Today I am participating in the Community Networking Meme started by Tom Baker from his blog Morning Erection.  Although some people have already done the meme (seriously people, read the rules of participation next time, geeze! haha), I am one of the many who are posting this at the exact same time.  Click here for the rules of participation if you are interested to see what the dealio is (because it’s just easier than me posting the rules as well), and check the bottom of the post for the Master Meme Blog List (which I will try to update a few times on the post date to make sure I have all of them).  I love internet memes, but unlike most of the ones out there (it’s over 9000, Lolcats, David after the Dentist etc), this one is really interesting, and is a really great way for people around the world to branch out and get to know each other.  So with that, I hope you enjoy, and now on to the questions!

Community Networking Meme

1. If you could interview anyone on your blog (alive or dead) who would you chose and why?
J. Michael Straczynski, the creator of my favourite television show Babylon 5. I would love to get the chance to meet him, let alone interview him – there are a lot of questions I have about the show, and I think it would be a great way to branch out to fans of the show as well. Also, as a writer, I’d like to ask his advice, maybe find out how he started, his biggest inspirations, and for any tips he can give aspiring writers.

2. What do you feel is your strength as a blogger?
I think my biggest strength as a blogger is the fact that I think my posts are “weak” so to speak; with that I always put a lot of extra effort into my posts, spending as much as several hours trying to fix up one sentence that doesn’t sound right, or finding the right photo to accompany it. I think that this makes my posts a bit more polished, and I think (hope!) that my extra efforts go noticed by my readers. Additionally, I feel that I can have a unique voice which has trickled in from my day-to-day life; I like to use colourful language, and I can be a little silly when I speak, and I think it translates well into my blog, making my posts more interesting.

3. Can you share a little bit about yourself that you have not already mentioned on your blog?
Well I’m fairly open on my blog – probably more so than I am with people I know well in real life. Trying to find something worth sharing is a hard thing. I suppose just a few small tidbits: my favourite book is a three-way tie between “The Book of Negroes” by Lawrence Hill, “Dune” by Frank Herbert, and “The Shining” by Stephen King. I wear size 8 shoes, my favourite colours are green, purple and brown. I have a very big fear of being on open water – so to get me on a boat you’ll have to drug me or drag me kicking and screaming (I’m kind of like B.A. from the A-Team – except not as black and cool, although I do like to fight foo’s yo).

4. If you were forced to change the name of your blog, what would you change it to? Why?
If I had to, I’d try to change my blog to a name that was unique (which is almost impossible). There’s a few other “Over a Cup of Coffee”s out there, so that’s kind of a drag. I may go back to my first idea which was “I’m Right, You’re Wrong, So Deal With It” – something about that title just makes me giggle.

5. What do you think is the most fulfilling part of being a blogger?
I think on some level to be a blogger you have to be a little narcissistic. I know that sounds awful, but for me I spend a lot of my time worrying about others, talking out others problems, listening to others. As much as I adore that, because I do, sometimes it leaves me high and dry. And with a blog, people are coming to read what I have to say, what I think, and I hope that they genuinely are interested and that they care. I suppose the most fulfilling part of it is that it’s given me the opportunity to branch out and meet people online that are amazing, who have similar interests, and don’t feel obligated to read what I have to say because they know me – they actually want to. And likewise, I’ve been able to find people who I really care about a wide variety of topics, and are just genuinely amazing people. It’s just a wonderful feeling to get to know someone with so many similar interests and that actually give a shit (pardon my language), when they don’t really have to – but they want to.

6. What would you do with your last day if you found you had only one more day to live?
I’d spend it with the people I love. I’d try to say goodbye to all the people who I really genuinely love. I’d probably go get a coffee from my favourite coffee shop, hang out with some friends, go to a restaurant that I love, and watch some of my favourite movies. And honestly, part of that last day would probably be me wallowing in self-pity and crying before I go do all those awesome things – I mean, who wouldn’t be a little distraught?

7. You’ve been doing medical research for decades and have finally found a cure. What was it that you found a cure for and why did you choose this particular ailment?
If I could find the cure for one ailment, I suppose it would be Ondine’s Curse, which is also known as congenital central alveolar hypoventilation syndrome. This ailment is the result of a malfunctioning autonomic nervous system; victims of Ondine’s Curse are unable to breathe spontaneously, and must be conscious of every breath they take. The name is derived from the story of the water nymph Ondine. She fell in love with a woman, and forfeited her immortality to be with him as he had pledged his undying love for her. She ended up finding him in the arms of another woman. With that, she cursed him, declaring that because he had pledged his love with every waking breath, he would die the moment he fell asleep.

I chose this particular ailment because it sounds absolutely dreadful, and because it’s one of those ailments that people don’t know much about, and isn’t on the top of the list for ailments that are in the most dire need to be cured. I guess I find things that are a little odd more interesting, and I always feel bad for the people that kind of get forgotten, or the underdogs.

8. What is your most guilty pleasure?
You know, I don’t really have one that jumps out at me. I suppose eating when I’m upset, or something that is bad for me – but everyone has those moments. If I had to pick one I suppose it would be watching a marathon of a TV show, like Friends or CSI; it’s completely useless, unproductive, and lazy, but I love to do it once in a while.

9. Answer only one. What is your favorite book, movie or TV show?
Only one? Pfft! I suppose I’ll answer for movie. My favourite movie is a tie between The Color Purple and The Usual Suspects. If you haven’t seen these movies, then simply put: you suck. Well, just kidding – you don’t suck, but seriously, go watch them.

10. What do you think is the very best smell in the world? The one smell that can take you back to a time and place of a very vivid memory in your past?
I don’t think it’s any surprise to anyone that my favourite smell is coffee. To some it is quite off-putting, but something about the dark, rich, pungent smell of a fresh pot of coffee just sends chills down my spine. To me, coffee is comfort – the smell transports me to times when I would sit with my friends, laughing at something completely moronic while drinking at a local coffee shop. If I had to pick another, it would be garlic. Garlic, roasting in the oven, sautéing in a pan, it doesn’t matter. Garlic reminds me of home – not that my house always stinks or anything, but we love garlic here. It just reminds me of my family.

  4. I can relate to you about spending hours trying to fix up my sentences just so that I can make an impact. But what the hell, write to express and not to impress right? But still I have this eagerness to be a little impressive especially that it takes me weeks to fill a new post.

    • I’m not really worried about impressing anyone. I do it because I’m very anal retentive. The only person I really want to impress is myself, if I impress anyone else along the way then bonus! haha. I’m just a stickler for things “sounding right” haha, if that makes any sense.

      Thanks for stopping by! 🙂

  5. Wow- Odine’s Curse sounds horrible =/ it’s amazing how so many horrible diseases exist and barely anyone knows about them…
but I’m totally with you on the coffee. Doesn’t remind me of anything, but its just such an awesome smell!

    • Yeah, I sometimes end up reading up on stuff like that – usually when i’m on a loop (as in, i keep clicking on links after reading one of their articles – I usually get stuck for at least an hour). And indeed, coffee smell is delcious 😀

  6. Awesome 🙂

I’m pretty open on my blog versus being so open to others in person.

I too, think bloggers are somewhat nariccistic but somehow its balanced because bloggers read about other bloggers and comment.

  7. Well done. The responses have the quality of being spontanious and yet well considered all at once.

    The coffee thing: Yup! 🙂

Ondin’s Curse: little research is done when the disease is rare or relatively so … yet another “curse” …

The Color Purple – three-tissue book and move, among the all-time favs.

Nice to “meet” you thanks to Tom. Will be back.

    Blog on. . .

  8. Hi, first time visitor and I came via the meme project.

#2 sounds like your strength is just being you.

#4 your chosen title is secretly every blogger’s subtitle!

#7 thanks for teaching us about Ondine’s Curse, it sounds devastating.

#9, I suck and I will rent The Usual Suspects.

#10, mmmmm — I love BOTH of those smells. Lately, however, I hate the coffee smell because how can you NOT smell it and not get any unless you’re a non-coffee drinker. I’m currently on a weight loss detox program. No caffeine.

I enjoyed reading your answers and am glad for the opportunity to meet you. I’m happy I took part in this today.

    • Hello! Thanks for stopping by!! 🙂 As for not being able to have caffeine, I am so sorry to hear that! I shall have to have all the caffeine that you cannot have ontop of my own quota 😛 lol

  9. {waves!} Here I am, Cherlyn! Your answers are so cool. I bet you don’t take no stuff off a nobody! I really like your movie choices – the fact that they are tied speaks volumes about your character. For the curious, I’m saying, “You’re deep!”

For instance, your honesty in #6 goes deeper than the usual platitudes – not that there’s anything wrong with those! – but you and Reymos are the only two (so far) who took this question to a different level. In your case, admitting to self-pity. You’re absolutely right. I doubt that I would be as stoic as I made myself out to be in my own answer to this question.

Oddly enough, I like coffee, but I like the smell better. Nothing like the aroma from a freshly opened jar of instant (oh, the profanity! I know – but nobody else in the house drinks it).

    • Hey, sorry for the late reply. I was checking my spam comments and yours ended up in there for some reason :S. odd – sorry about that though!

And I’m glad you enjoyed my answers 🙂 I try not to take people’s crap, but it happens haha. As for #6, yeah, I can’t imagine myself travelling on my last day to live like some people, although it’d be cool – I just know travelling stresses me out lol. But I think on some degree everyone would be a little distraught, I just know I’d probably succumb to dispair for a little while before anything else could happen lol.

Instant coffee eh? Never been fond of the stuff myself, but it will do! lol But I will say the instant stuff does smell delicious as well 🙂

      Thanks for stopping by!

      • Hi Cherlyn,

Spam, eh? I’m going to have a word with the police. Seems that, if I log in to my account, my comments get flagged. (Happened on AbsurdOldBird’s blog, too…)

        Thanks for letting me know.

        Happy New Year!

  10. I love that your favourite smell was coffee, I should have guessed! I will also make a point of seeing the usual suspects because I now have the fear that people will start to heckle me on the street and throw vegtables screaming “YOU SUCK!” till I do.

  11. Hi Cherlyn…I dont know you but with your smart replies, it seems that I could picture you now! I love brown too and the smell of coffee. This is the reason why I used coffee to paint
    The aromatic style in painting

I dont know much of the ailment but I think it is an excellent research work to pursue…

    Happy weekend and Merry Xmas!

    • Wow – those paintings are absolutely fabulous! If I had money I’d totally try to commission one off of you, you’re so talented!

Thanks for stopping by – and have a great weekend as well 🙂

      • Who knows you will get one of them for free! Dont worry I send a sample of the artwork since you love coffee. Just promise that you keep it and have framed! Just keep in touch thru our blogsites.

  12. I feel like I missed the true spirit of my own meme. Your answers are so detailed and mine are so one sentence! Your answers are really great. Melinda is right. Even though we have been communicating for months now, I feel like I know you better.

Before this morning I had never heard of Ondine’s Curse. It sounds very scary. And thanks, it appears that I forgot to put my site on the master list! Too much on my mind.

Maybe one day we should do this again with someone else taking the lead.

    • Well, I’ve always been one to over answer a question, so don’t feel bad 🙂 And I’m glad you feel like you know me better! I’ve been told that I can be a closed book, so hopefully this helps.

This was a lot of fun Tom 🙂

  13. I feel like I know you now. I’m new to your fun is this meme!

The Shining! I just watched the movie with my daughter and it is still so scary the 10th time. ha ha I’m with you on the smell of coffee.
